GoFundMe Started for Mecha Designer Kazutaka Miyatake After House Fire

A GoFundMe campaign was recently started for Miyatake Kazutaka, a well-known anime mecha designer after a terrible fire destroyed his home last year. Miyatake (72) was injured in the fire and spent some time in the hospital, while his wife died.

In May 2021, a fire broke out at the home of Kazutaka Miyatake and his wife. According to the GoFundMe page, the Insurance decided that, since his house wasn’t completely destroyed, they wouldn’t cover the damages. Thanks to his status as a local celebrity and beloved anime industry figure, the city of Yokosuka kindly provided him with temporary housing, but he needs a more permanent solution.

Japanese mecha artist and illustrator Tenjin Hidetaka and podcast host Adrian Lozano started the campaign. All money raised will go to Miyatake and will help cover living costs, housing, replacing furniture, cleaning out his old fire-damaged home, and purchasing work supplies.

An outpour of support from fans all over the world saw the $18,000 (¥2,064,402) goal easily surpassed, and as of the time of writing, $45,450 has been raised to help the beloved and influential figure in the anime industry. In his long career, Miyatake who co-founded Studio Nue helped with mecha designs on series such as Space Battleship Yamato, Macross, Angel Links, RahXephon, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, and more,
