Junji Ito’s Bloodsucking Darkness Manga Gets Live-Action Adaptation

According to Variety, Junji Ito’s “Bloodsucking Darkness” is set to be adapted into a live-action film. Jeff Howard, known for his work on the “Resident Evil” 2021 series and “The Haunting of Hill House,” will be writing the screenplay and serving as executive producer. Ito himself will also be producing the project. Fangoria Studios is responsible for producing the film.

The film will have multiple producers, including Tara Ansley, Armen Aghaeian, and Abhi Goel, who will be producing under Fangoria Studios. Yasu Kutami and Tsubasa Yamaguchi will be producers under Amuse Group USA. Additionally, Phil Wurtzel will be the executive producer under Friel Films, while Kevin Nicklaus, Ryan Lewis, and Joe Riley will also be executive producers.

“Bloodsucking Darkness” is one of Ito’s one-shot manga short stories that follows a girl named Nami, whose obsession with dieting leads her to vomit blood. She has dreams about a world that rains blood and wakes up with blood all around her. When she meets Kazuya, a boy who is concerned about her dieting, he tries to get close to her. The story is available in English in Viz Media’s Smashed: Junji Ito Story Collection book.

Furthermore, a new anime series based on 20 different Ito stories, titled “Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre,” premiered on Netflix globally on January 19. Additionally, Ito’s “Uzumaki” manga will also be adapted into a four-episode anime mini-series set to premiere on Toonami.
